Wackystan?

Wow, in the category of unsettling understatements concerning world affairs, this strip wins hands down. Have a five cent stogie.

This is pretty humorous though. I can relate.

Saturday! Mark vs. Beetle!

OK, until now I've not felt the need to point out the erroneous male color scheme of this female Mallard. It's to be expected from some metro-centric King Features office jockey. But evidently they've decided to take some artistic license here with the ducklings because I would contend that no one is that stupid. Either that or they've hired a four year old and he happens to like his duckies blue. It still doesn't quite explain why Mark and Homer seem to have joined the living dead.

Funny! Funny sh**! Go Walkers, go!

Beetle Goes A-Shoppin'

I don't care what you say, this is pretty damn funny to me. It's just so perfectly deadpan and nonsensical. I'd love to see several more panels. "Here's the ammo." "Okay." "Do you need the receipt?" "No." "Okay." "Have we all lost the will to live?" "Yes." "Okay."

He's the... Drunken General

The Comics Curmudgeon already commented on this one a while back. But he doesn't seem to understand that General Halftrack is partaking in a perfectly normal drunken rumination. Who doesn't, in an extremely intoxicated state, daydream about gnomes becoming comfortably well-off, birds hovering in a vacuum, or Lisa Kudrow's after-death concert series? Josh is right about the golf club rainbow though. What the f*** is that?

Fly, Beetle, Fly!

More Beetle Bailey Awareness Training! Sunday's strip is pretty standard, but I cracked right up at panel seven. It pretty much sums up what I strive for in life: to be hopelessly inundated by my personal interests to the point that the mind-numbing repetitiveness of my work day barely distracts from them, and in fact, enhances them! Someday, as I am processing invoices and dodging phone calls, I too will be Superman.

Beetle Bailey Awareness Training 2

Beetle Bailey has been unfairly grouped into the category of has-been comic strips that have nothing left to say and have completely lost any edge they may have had in the creator's angst-ridden young adulthood. I say pshaw and give you this example, where Beetle is shown to loath his life so much that he screams protests at the moment he wakes. Now, I'm not saying I can relate to that, but anyone who says they haven't had a moment like this at some point is a liar or one of those strange, eternally-optimistic people that run associations in charge of hanging decorative fish on the light poles of Main Street, America.

Beetle Bailey Awareness Training

You know, I think we've all became a little complacent when it comes to Beetle Bailey. I too am guilty, although I have to state for the record that for the last several years it has been one of the very few I read in the paper. I'd probably still read Snuffy Smith too, but that's another story. But do you realize that Beetle debuted on September 4th, 1950, an entire month before Peanuts hit the papers? And Mort Walker is still alive and kicking them out every day! Now, there's no comparing the genius of Schultz to the often pedestrian humor of Walker, but there's something to be said for longevity.

So read Beetle Bailey, dammit, and respect your comic strip elders! I plan on doing some extensive non-Wiki-fied research on this subject, so yes, there will be further Beetle Bailey Awareness Training.
